The Start of the Season

The 2016-17 school football season began with a trio of friendlies at Hill View Junior School for the Year 5/6 seven a side squad. Goals from captain Riley and Matthew gave the squad a narrow 2-1 victory over Dame Dorothy Primary School. The second game saw a 5-1 victory over Hill View with a goal from John adding to doubles from Riley and Jack. The final game of the evening saw a resounding 6-0 over Fulwell courtesy of two goals apiece from Matthew, Kyle and Fletcher.

This set the squad up nicely for the opening league games against Fulwell and Castletown on Tuesday night at Castletown Primary. Despite having all the play against Fulwell, a series of missed chances looked as if it would cost the squad dearly especially when Fulwell took the lead with their only shot on target in the game. A late goal from John however saw the squad back on level terms and with no further goals the game ended at 1-1. Castletown then proceeded to beat Fulwell 4-0 to set up a tough final game for the squad against the hosts. Despite falling behind to an early goal, the players responded magnificently and two goals from Riley and a screamer from Jack ensured a 3-1 shoreline and a first win of the season. In the squad’s first outing together, four points from the opening two games was a good return and they will look to build upon this start in the weeks ahead. Well done boys and girls.
