Alan Grimes Trophy
The Year 5/6 seven a side squad travelled to Hill View to defend the Alan Grimes County Cup which the school won last season. The boys’ first game was against Easington Colliery and they made a great start when John fired the school into a 1-0 half time lead. Easington responded however with two second half goals of their own to win 2-1 which was cruel on the boys given that the winning goal came with virtually the last kick of the game.
The second game saw the squad bounce back to defeat Castletown 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Jack and with Hill View drawing 0-0 with Easington in the other game, the boys went into the final game against Hill View knowing they would retain the trophy if they bettered Easington’s result in the last round of games. Jack secured another 1-0 victory with his second goal of the tournament but Easington’s 2-0 win over Castletown meant that the school finished runners-up by a solitary goal for the second time in three seasons. The boys have done fantastically well however to go so close again to winning the most prestigious trophy in Primary School football and should be very proud of themselves. Well done boys!
Julie Ann Thompson Trophy
The squad returned to Hill View to compete in the final of the Julie Ann Thompson trophy. The boys began with a hard fought 0-0 draw against Farringdon before goals from Matthew, Fletcher and Riley (2) gave the boys a 4-1 victory over Bernard Gilpin. This sent the squad into the last game knowing that victory over Hill View would secure the trophy for the school for the first time but a poor performance saw the hosts triumph 2-0 to leave the boys in third place. Considering that the squad was missing Nathan (holiday) and Jack (injured) and travelled with no substitutes, the boys did excellent to come so close to winning the trophy and should be very proud of their efforts. Well done!
