Broadway Junior School was absolutely buzzing with excitement when they received the fantastic news that one of their pupils Lennon from Year 5, had won a national competition to meet children’s author David Walliams at the BBC’s Radio Times headquarters in London.
On Monday 25th February, Lennon, his mum and his class teacher, headed by train to the big city, for a date with the author. Lennon’s invitation followed his entry in a competition wherein children were asked what question they would ask David Walliams if they were lucky enough to meet him. Lennon was keen to find out who David Walliams’ favourite teacher was and why when he was a pupil at school. Along with eleven other children Lennon spent a fantastic afternoon in the author’s company and when it was time to leave he presented him with a very special gift from Sunderland, a copy of the Mackem dictionary.
Lennon is now hoping that one of David Walliams next books will be set in the North East and include phrases such as “clarty” and “dilutey”. Who knows! Having won competitions to meet author’s Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) and David Walliams, Lennon’s teacher Claire Johnson is now on the look out for a third in order that Class 10 at Broadway will have scored their very own ‘hat trick’
