The School’s Year 5/6 five a side team reached the finals evening of the McCauliffe Trophy with wins over Farringdon and Grangetown in the qualifying group stage at the Goals Centre. The boys were grouped with Hill View, Benedict Biscop and Northern Saints at final’s night with the top two teams qualifying for the semi-finals. The side got off to the best possible start with a 3-2 victory in a very close game against Benedict Biscop thanks to two goals from captain Kalen and a penalty from Kruz. The boys then secured a semi final place with a 3-0 victory over Northern Saints thanks to goals from Kalen, Lennon and Kairon. The final group tie saw the boys fall to a 0-2 to a very strong Hill View side in an excellent game of football.
With the boys finishing as runners up in the group, they then faced Bernard Gilpin who finished top of the opposite group. This was another really tough game of football and the boys were indebted to keeper Alex for brilliantly saving a first half penalty kick. Lennon then scored what would prove to be the winning goal when he fired home right footed from outside the
area to give the boys a lead which they
battled manfully to protect as they fought
their way into the final and a return game
against Hill View who had beaten St Mary’s
5-0 in the other semi final. The game proved
to be a step too far for the side who, despite
producing a very brave performance,
succumbed to a 0-4 defeat as Hill View scored
twice in each half to deservedly secure the trophy.
Mr Lindstedt was extremely proud of the boys,
their attitude and their performances over the
course of the competition. They did superbly
to reach the final of the tournament and only
fell to a much stronger Hill View side at the
last hurdle. It was a particularly promising
showing, given that two of the boys, Kruz
and Kairon, are only in Year 5 and have
another chance to progress in this competition
next season. Well done boys!
