Back in the spring term, the school was delighted to receive the news that we had been awarded gold standard in the 2019-20 Great Active School Charter. This is the first time that the school has applied for this award and to enter at gold standard was a fantastic achievement and a recognition of the effort everyone in school makes to ensure that the children lead a healthy lifestyle. This was followed by the news that, because of the Covid 19 pandemic, the School Games Mark awards had been paused and Broadway’s silver standard award would be extended for another year.

Whilst we were naturally delighted by this award we felt, like a number of Sunderland schools, disappointed that the chance to advance to gold standard had been denied and recognition of the sporting achievement in school this year hadn’t been truly recognised. As a result of this, the Youth Sport Trust decide to introduce two one-off awards for 2019-20.

The first award recognised schools which have committed to the development of PE and sport during the autumn and spring terms with the second award celebrating the schools which have continued this work ‘virtually’ during lockdown this term. We were delighted to receive the news on Friday that it was felt that Broadway had successfully met the criteria for both categories and subsequently the school has achieved both awards. Everyone at Broadway Junior School is delighted at receiving this recognition and we will be striving to ‘better’ these awards in 2020-21.
